Finally got my library card the other day, and have already been back for more books. My first batch included some pop psychology and the Czech movie Kolya; the second batch includes Hot Property: The Stealing of Ideas in an Age of Globalization by former Perot running mate Pat Choate, The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (started this one over the summer but had to give the copy back), and the movie Play Time by Jacques Tati.
Buying books seems weird to me. Of course, I've moved around a lot, and books are pains in the ass to move. But aside from that, it seems more constructive to give all of the money people spend on books directly to libraries instead. Yeah, people can buy books and share them, but if libraries had more funds then they could buy more books to distribute to more people than even the most gracious book trader. The libraries could also stay open later and run more programs.
I can't remember the last time I bought a book. It must have been years ago. Sometimes I find books in the trash, and read those. But most things I read come from libraries.
