My name's Lauri and I'm the hostess of this site. For about 12 years now I've been taking home clothing that I find on the street -- in bags by the curbside, lying on the sidewalk, etc. -- to wash and wear them. Sometimes I wonder just how these items get where they are, and why. I guess a lot of people's sweaters come untied from their waists, or get dropped during drunken reveries, or fall out of big bags.
When people comment on my found clothes -- "hey, cool sweater!" "nice coat!" "nifty hat!" -- I tell them, "Thanks. I found it on the street." Then they give me a weird look. It's kind of silly of them, really -- I mean, I clean the stuff in a proper washing machine. I don't just pick up a hat from the sidewalk and start wearing it.
Which brings us to the point of this site: To take away the stigma associated with found clothes, and also to celebrate these items as free, reused fashions. I encourage all viewers who find clothes to send me a note and a digital photo of their found clothing items so that we can create an archive and share. Because it really is an amazing experience when you look down on the ground and find $300 designer sunglasses. It's really like God is smiling on you that day.
In the next few days I'll post some pictures of my found clothes, just to start things off.
